COWCATCHER

((( An Observer, # 11 )))

They step up to the county railroad tracks
They look so nervous but they try to relax
A train has never been a problem before
But now they're haunted by
That image of gore
When thirteen years ago
The stranger was killed
This very spot is where
His body was spilled

So c'mon, so c'mon
There's a train coming soon so c'mon
They should be crossing the rails
And the wooden board trail
To wind up safe across the tracks
Without the slightest little scratch
So c'mon Cowcatcher
Won't you leave them alone?
Their only purpose is to find a new home
She never makes him a drink
But he still loves her a lot

I still remember when the stranger was hit
The local news explained
His body was split
Straight down the middle by
The front of the train
The Cowcatcher is the name of the frame
It serves to clear obstructions
Off of the track
The Cowcatcher in front
And the Caboose in the back

So c'mon
There's a train coming soon so c'mon
They should be crossing the rails
And the wooden board trail
To wind up safe across the tracks
Without the slightest little scratch
So c'mon Cowcatcher
Won't you leave them alone?
Their only purpose is to find a new home
She never makes him a drink
But he still loves her a lot

They make a bold attempt at
Crossing the tracks
But they don't know
This is no time to relax
'Cause in the time they spent
Perusing the scene
The limits of the locomotive machine
Decreased in distance from
The boy and the girl
A minor difference in this great big world

But they stop, but they stop
'Cause her shoelace is caught
So they stop
Then the train blows a whistle
He shoots up like a missile
And he turns to find the front of the train
He trips and falls away
The Cowcatcher
Couldn't leave them alone
The boy is living but
The girl can't be sewn
A local myth urges
Never cross at this very spot
So go on Cowcatcher
Won't you leave them in peace?
The boy is paralyzed
In sadness and grief
She never made him a drink
But he still loved her a lot
